Who is Senator Frederickson's staff?

The Senator has one staff member: his Legislative Assistant, Wendy Haavisto. Wendy is in charge of the office’s daily activities. She also handles the Senator’s calendar, so you need to talk to her if you want to schedule an appointment. She can be contacted at 651-296-8138.

Yes. The Senator’s constituents are important to him. He makes every effort to respond to concerns in a timely manner.

Will the Senator meet with my school/organization?

Yes, although it does depend on his schedule. For example, during the legislative session he spends most of his time in St. Paul and cannot get back to the district easily. Call his Legislative Assistant, Wendy Haavisto, at 651-296-8138 to determine when the Senator can meet.

How many members are in the legislature?

There are 67 Senators and 134 Representatives for a total of 201 members. Each Senate district is divided into two House districts.

Who is allowed on the floor of the Senate?

The general public is not allowed on the Senate floor. The only people admitted to the floor of Senate Chamber are members of the Senate and House, constitutional officers, former governors of Minnesota, judges of the Trial and Appellate Courts, members of Congress, members of the press, and Senate staff.

Are visitors allowed to attend sessions of the Senate and House?

Yes. Public galleries are accessible from the third floor of the Capitol. No passes are required except for opening day and when the Legislature meets in joint session. The Sergeant at Arms may be contacted for seats for groups in the galleries. No visitors are allowed on the floor of the Senate. No smoking is permitted on the floor of the Senate or in the galleries. Photos are prohibited. Applause, demonstrations, food, and beverages are also prohibited in the galleries.

Where do I park when I visit the Capitol?

Public metered parking is available at Lot Q, north of the Capitol at Cedar Street and Sherburne Avenue; Lot AA, across from the State Office Building at Aurora Avenue and Rice Street; and the orange level of the Centennial Building Ramp at Cedar Street and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. All-day parking is available in Lot Q and the Centennial ramp. Public street metered parking is available along John Ireland Boulevard and Fuller Avenue, which are near the Transportation Building. St. Paul meter patrols will issue tickets for expired parking.

 

Outdoor handicapped parking is available in Lot N, which is on the northwest side of the Capitol, and in Lot F. Indoor handicapped parking is available on the blue level of the Centennial Office Building Ramp; and on the entry level of the Administration Building Ramp (two stalls).

 

Since parking is limited during legislative sessions, busing may be easier. Freeway express bus service is available. Call the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC), (612) 827-7733, for your specific route information.

What public services are available in the Capitol?

There is a cafeteria in the basement of the Capitol, and there are cafeterias in the other state office buildings. During session, a quick lunch counter is located on the second floor of the Capitol.

 

Tours of the Capitol are given on the hour every day. Contact the Information Desk on the first floor of the Capitol for group tours. The telephone number is 651-296-2881.
